MAKO - the fly reel with the best drag system in the world! And the American company didn't even come up with this bold statement itself, but rather the countless MAKO customers who pit their reels against the fastest and strongest predatory fish in the world. MAKO reels are the undisputed number 1, especially among saltwater anglers. A completely encapsulated, calibrated, soft-starting and absolutely strong carbon fibre drag system that offers you the same reliable braking power for decades. Again and again. From zero to one hundred in a single, buttery smooth revolution!
The braking system
The reason that plastic or cork brakes do not exist on fast cars is obvious. For Jack Charlton, the only option for powerful, precise and reliable braking power was carbon, as he was already familiar with this robust material from aircraft brake discs. For unrestricted performance, the engineer also knew that the braking system had to be completely sealed to protect it from water, salt, dust or sand. To fulfil these requirements, Jack drew on his experience in flight control hydraulics. He wanted to develop a fly reel that was sealed in a similar way to the pumps in jet aeroplanes. No water, salt or other contaminants should be allowed to affect the performance of the product. And because the brake is a completely closed system, it does not need to be lubricated or waded. Nothing comes in, nothing goes out!
Today, inside the brake piston is a multi-disc full-contact carbon brake system with "Button Technology", which eliminates starting resistance. Even with a strong brake setting, the initial resistance is soft. With a single 360-degree turn of the oversized, very grippy brake knob, you can access the full spectrum of this high-performance brake. A single full rotation from zero to one hundred, in which the braking force is increased linearly. If you close the brake completely, there is nothing left - more resistance than you will ever need in a real-life scenario. Absolutely incredible braking power inside this mechanical masterpiece and one of the main reasons why a MAKO is the first choice for many experienced saltwater anglers!
The drag system is also calibrated. In other words, an appropriate brake setting will always deliver the same braking performance at all times, regardless of potential wear. For such a system to work so precisely, a device is built in that automatically returns the clutch pressure plate to the exact height, even if the clutch plates become less thick due to wear. At all times you have full control over the braking resistance and the pressure exerted on the fish. So your grandchildren could set the brake knob to the same position several decades from now and the reel would generate the exact same line tension.
Type III anodising
Let's take a look at the exterior. One of the secrets behind the longevity of all MAKO reels is hidden in the chemical treatment of the aluminium to make it even more resistant to external influences. Type III anodising gives the wheels a hardness similar to that of ceramic. The process forms a super-hard, resistant layer on the surface that protects the castor from corrosion, impacts, scratches and other external stress factors. Although the process is many times more expensive than type I or type II anodising, the effect is also much more durable. Even after many years of intensive use, a MAKO looks as good as new if you give it a little polish. Even after a reel had been lying on the seabed for 12 months, it was able to shine again after a little polishing and provide many more years of reliable service (you can read this incredible story here ).
Ergonomics
Braking performance, longevity and durability are important points, but what about the user-friendliness of the reels? Here too, MAKO has not let us down and remains true to its perfectionist approach. In addition to the buttery smooth running of the reel, which produces a gentle clicker sound in both directions of rotation, it also feels great in the hand when cranking. A large, easy-to-grip handle gives you perfect control when fighting a large sea fish and prevents your hand from cramping up during long drills. The brake setting is adjusted using the large, MAKO-characteristic brake knob. Operation is intuitive, you can either reach into the recesses with your fingers or turn the knob with the heel of your hand. The entire castor is the result of absolute precision work. All edges and millings are perfectly crafted. The only note: the relatively high weight of the reel, which is the price for the high level of performance and robustness of this fly reel.
For which use do we recommend which MAKO?
- 9500 we recommend for class #6-9: Perfect for light saltwater fishing (e.g. bonefish and permit, or inshore for sea trout, sea bass, pollack and co.). But the 9500 model also cuts a fine figure when hunting for pike, zander and the like. Likewise on your switch rods, e.g. on smaller salmon and sea trout rivers.
